Leading the Evolution
Relating ASPPA’s rich history through the memories of those who participated in that history is the approach that lies at the core of the ASPPA history book project.
The large-format book, Leading the Evolution: ASPPA’s 50 Years at the Forefront of the Retirement Industry, is being written by professional author Jack El-Hai, working closely with a special history book task force of past presidents led by 1998 President Karen Jordan. The task force’s work began in 2010, and is nearing completion, with publication of Leading the Evolution slated to coincide with the 2016 ASPPA Annual Conference in October 2016. Every ASPPA member will receive a complimentary copy of the book.
The book is based on nearly 40 interviews with ASPPA members, leaders, staffers and others. Among those interviewed:
- Carl Duncan, the last surviving ASPPA founder;
- Executive Directors Chet Salkind and Brian Graff;
- Numerous past presidents, back to 1980;
- Prominent figures in the pension field; and
- IRS and DOL officials with whom ASPPA worked with over the years.
Nearly all of the interviews were videotaped, and transcripts of the tapes formed the foundation of author Jack El-Hai’s manuscript. So, in a very significant way, the book incorporates the stories and memories of the interviewees – a true oral history of ASPPA going all the way back to the beginning, seen through the eyes of those who were there.
